HAVERFORD, Pa. - Tommy Bergjans and Justin Coulter guided the Haverford College baseball team to a 7-1 Centennial Conference win over Ursinus College at Kannerstein Field on Friday afternoon.
The Fords (14-13, 7-4 CC) moved above the .500 mark with the win and remained in a tie with Muhlenberg College (14-13, 7-4) for second place in the conference after the Mules also won on Friday. Ursinus (13-13, 5-7) dropped to .500 overall and into the fifth spot in the league after the defeat.
Bergjans (6-1) struck out double-digit batters (10) for the second consecutive start and increased his program-best career strikeout total to 225. The right-hander scattered four hits over eight innings without allowing an earned run. Bergjans struck out two or more batters in three of the first five innings, while eight of his 10 strikeouts came by getting the batter to chase strike three.
Justin Coulter belted his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coulter eyed the first pitch of the at bat and sent the ball flying over the left field wall. The homer scored George Hatamiya who led the inning off with a walk and put the Fords up 3-1.
Nick Miranda continued to be aggressive at the plate as the senior went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Miranda's first hit of the game was a two-out single up the middle that scored Hatamiya from third in the bottom of the second. The center fielder finishes the series against the Bears with an impressive stat line of 7-for-11 from the dish, four runs scored and three runs batted in.
The Fords tacked on at least one run in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to slowly pull away from Ursinus and finish with the 7-1 decision. Haverford's patience at the plate paid off as the Fords drew 11 walks in the contest and forced the visitors to throw five different pitchers.
Bears starting pitcher Seth Regensburg (3-4) lasted 5.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits.
Patrick Falkoff entered in the ninth in a non-save situation and discarded Ursinus in order to conclude the game.
Haverford continues its Centennial slate by traveling to Washington College tomorrow for a doubleheader. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 12:30 p.m.
