Baseball Finishes Gene Cusic Classic With Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team wrapped up its successful stint in the Gene Cusic Classic with a 10-2 win on Saturday against Bluffton University (4-5). The Fords will leave the Sunshine State with an 8-1 overall record to open their 2016 season.

The hot bats continued for the Fords who have scored at least seven runs in all eight wins. Haverford's offense spread its run production throughout the game, crossing the plate in six different innings. On the mound, the pitching was equally impressive as the Fords surrendered just two runs in the contest.

In the game, the top three batters in Haverford's lineup combined for nine hits. Leadoff hitter Ethan Lee-Tyson went 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI. First baseman Ben Verducci was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Outfielder Matt Goss went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run. All three players are batting over .400 this season, led by Verducci at .513.

Second baseman Zach Taylor also had a three-hit game, scoring two runs and driving one in.

Stephen Ridings drew the start for Haverford. He threw five scoreless innings and struck out 10. Ridings picked up his first win of the season. Grant Finn and John Miraglia each threw two innings in relief.

Following the win, head coach Dave Beccaria's team will return home for its home opener on Tuesday when the Fords host Immaculata. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Kannerstein Field.
