BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Haverford College baseball team (10-5) split its doubleheader against NYU (7-13) on Saturday, winning the first game, 5-2, in extra innings and then falling in the second game, 5-4. The Fords displayed impressive performances from pitchers in both games. The stout pitching allowed Haverford to stay competitive and even earn a comeback win in game one.

In the first game of the doubleheader, shortstop Ben Furlong singled to drive in Thomas Vollaro in the top of the ninth with two outs to tie the game at two runs each. In the tenth, Ben Verducci and Ethan Lee-Tyson scored after a fielding error by NYU's pitcher. Later in the inning, Matt Goss crossed the plate for the Fords' third run in the frame.

Starting pitcher Stephen Ridings struck out eight batters over five innings. The Haverford junior gave up just one earned run, allowing the Fords to stay alive in the game. In relief, John Masella and George Hatamiya combined to pitch five innings, giving up one run (zero earned). Hatamiya picked up his first win of the season as the Fords won the game in extras.

Game two went scoreless until NYU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Fords tied the game three innings later when Goss and Spencer Sohmer both scored following a throwing error by the second baseman.

After NYU scored in the bottom half of the sixth, the Fords re-took the lead in the seventh inning when Verducci scored on another throwing error by the NYU defense and then designated hitter Nick Ott drove Sohmer in with a single. Ott finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Violets tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then scored the decisive run in the eighth before the game was shortened.

On the mound, Justin Herring threw 5.2 innings and struck out five.

Haverford continues its road trip with a game against Eastern University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
