CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Haverford College baseball team (20-12, 9-5 CC) fell twice on Saturday in a doubleheader on the road against Centennial Conference opponent Washington College (23-8-1, 7-5 CC) at Athey Baseball Park. Both final scores were 5-3, although each game told a different story.

In game one, the Fords got off to an early lead after a Ben Verducci sacrifice fly in the third inning to score Thomas Vollaro. They quickly surrendered that lead in the next inning when the Shoremen were beneficiaries of four runs.

Haverford began to chip away in the fifth when Sam Kane drove in Ethan Lee-Tyson on an RBI double, but the run was unfortunately the team's last until a wild pitch scored Vollaro in the ninth inning. The Fords had a chance in that final frame, but stout defense from Washington College induced a double play to end the game.

In game two, Lee-Tyson got the Fords on the board with an inside the park home run in the top of the sixth inning when the Shoremen's centerfielder and rightfielder collided. Vollaro also scored on the play to give Haverford a 2-1 advantage, the team's only lead of the contest. The Fords scored again in the seventh when an RBI single by Ben Furlong scored Spencer Sohmer.

Starting pitcher Grant Finn kept the Shoremen in check for the most part, allowing just one run in the first five innings of the game before allowing three more in the sixth.

Head coach Dave Beccaria's team is in action again on Monday when it hosts Franklin & Marshall in a conference game at Kannerstein Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Fords will then look to wrap up their regular season at the end of the week.
