FORT MYERS, Fla. - Playing in a midday contest at Terry Park in Fort Myers, the Haverford College baseball team (2-4) dropped an 8-3 decision to Alvernia at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. Haverford was done in by a big third inning for the Golden Wolves, despite out hitting Alvernia 11 to nine on the afternoon.

The story of the contest was the big day from Zach Landry, who went 4-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the charge. Anthony Runfola added two hits to his ledger as he continues a strong start to his rookie campaign. Martin Matsumura took the ball for the first time since the 2019 season and struck out four batters in his 2.1 innings of work, scattering three hits in that starting turn. Wyatt Mattison got the bulk of the innings on Tuesday, striking out two in 4.2 innings of work. Landry doubled in the bottom of the first, providing some two out power to put the Fords within one after Alvernia struck for two in the top of the inning and added an RBI in a third-inning rally, answering after Alvernia struck for three runs in that frame.

Haverford had a tough time against Alvernia reliever Christian Burrus, as he picked up the same with five strikeouts, scattering just two hits after relieving David Linsalta, who scattered nine hits and walked three while striking out four for the Golden Wolves.  Kevin Casey and Riley Grohowski each notched scoreless frames for the Fords with a strikeout.

The Fords next return to action on Thursday, with a contest against Plymouth State. The first pitch at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic is slated for noon. Haverford will travel to Alvernia on March 26 for a twinbill ahead of the opening of conference play.
