Baseball Falls at Swarthmore, 18-5

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team (14-13, 5-3 CC) fell in the second game of a home-and-home series with Swarthmore (13-15, 6-2 CC) on Friday afternoon at Clothier Field, as the Garnet defended its home turf with an 18-5 victory.

Swarthmore struck first, plating a run in the first inning before breaking the contest wide open with a nine-run second frame. The hosts batted around in the inning, with Kirk Terada-Herzer notching three RBI in the stretch.

The Fords kept battling, getting on the board in the fifth against the Swarthmore bullpen as Jonny Flieder launched a solo home run off Jett Shue. Swarthmore added five more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 15-1 advantage, but the Fords scored three in the sixth as a walk to Luke Smith and consecutive singles from Zach Becker and Zach Landry set the stage for Anthony Runfola.  Runfola notched a single to plate a run and Kyle Beach then drilled a double into left field to trim the lead to 15-4. Another RBI single from Runfola in the seventh plated Becker for Haverford's fifth run of the contest.

Becker, Landry, Runfola, and Beach each had two-hit days for the visitors, who banged out 11 total hits. Dali Pomfret logged a scoreless eighth inning to highlight the day on the pitching side.

Baseball continues Centennial Conference action on Saturday, hosting Gettysburg in doubleheader action at Kannerstein Field, with game one beginning at noon.
