Full Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release
PHILADELPHIA – Haverford College cricket co-captain Nathaniel Rolfe has been named to the 2018-19 Philadelphia Inquirer Men's At-Large Academic team, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) announced in a release on Tuesday afternoon. The at-large teams take into account those student-athletes from area schools whose sports do not have a dedicated Academic All-Area team. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.
Rolfe gives the cricket program a second straight selection to the men's at-large squad after Richard Phillips '18 picked up the award a season ago. Rolfe, an opening batsman and bowler from San Marino, Calif., recently posted one of the finest batting performances in the history of the Haverford cricket program as he tallied a whopping 97 runs not out in a win over Amwell Valley earlier this month, the closest that any Haverford cricketer has gotten to the century mark in over 20 years.
Last season, Rolfe served as Haverford's primary batsman as Haverford captured the Philadelphia Intercollegiate Cricket Championship with an undefeated spring season, besting teams from Temple and Penn in the process.
Rolfe was also one of 16 Ambler Scholar Athletes recognized in 2018-19, a plaudit bestowed upon the senior student-athletes with the top GPAs at Haverford. A chemistry major with a minor in Latin, Rolfe was a summer researcher at Harvard Medical School's Shi Lab as part of the Cell Biology Research Scholars Program, and also has won the Class of 1896, and Class of 1902 prizes for excellence in Haverford's Latin program.
A total of four Haverford student-athletes were named to the men's at-large academic all-area team as Rolfe joins squash players Fitz Dougherty and Yash Singh, along with Academic All-Area Performer of the Year captain Gabriel Braun from men's fencing. The four honorees from the Fords tied Drexel for the most representatives on the men's side.
