Cricket Falls to Drexel in Intercollegiate Opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford Cricket faced off against Drexel this past Sunday in their first intercollegiate matchup of the season. The Fords unsuccessfully defended their total of 109 with the Dragons completing the run chase in just under 15 overs.

Finally sent to bat first, the Fords showed their temperament in the opening overs. Opening batsmen Simon Babb and Samuel Monks sought to keep the scoreboard ticking while protecting their wicket.  The pair pushed for quick singles and carefully left wide balls to accumulate runs.

After wickets in the second, fourth, and sixth overs, the Fords found themselves in trouble, scoring 23-3 after 6 overs.  The third wicket brought Senior Gulesh Shukla to the crease who would play another captain's innings for the Fords.

Careful defenses mixed with quick ones and twos built a solid base for Shukla and his strong drives down the ground peppered his innings with 4s and 6s. Shukla would play through the 19th over, scoring 60 runs off 50 deliveries before he was bowled out. Two quick wickets would wrap up the Haverford innings, setting Drexel a total of 109 to chase.

The Fords got a glimmer of hope early in their innings. Early opportunities for run outs and catches showed weakness in the Drexel offense. Unfortunately, the Fords were unable to capitalize in the field. Haverford would fend off the Dragons for 14 overs before eventually losing 113-0 to 109, all out.

The Fords now continue intercollegiate play next weekend, facing off against Columbia and George Washington next Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, respectively.
