Field hockey registers 2nd consecutive upset

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College field hockey team continued to make its presence known in 2012 with a 3-1 non-conference home victory over No. 16 Lebanon Valley College on Thursday evening at Swan Field.

The win by the Fords (2-0) is the second over a ranked opponent in less than a week as they registered a season-opening win over No. 18 Rowan University last Friday at Swan.

Haverford broke out to the early 1-0 lead as sophomore Catherine Aronowitz converted a Bryn Bissey feed in the fourth minute of the contest.

Extending the Fords' advantage to 2-0 with just under 15 minutes to go in the half, Bridget Gibbons tallied her second of the season off an assist from Brooke Kelly. Lebanon Valley (0-2) answered with a Cate Cusack tally with less than two minutes remaining before intermission to draw within one.

Haverford turned up the heat in the second half as it out shot the Dutchmen and won the corner battle (8-4). Providing an added cushion, Christina Gould (pictured at right) notched her first collegiate goal 13 minutes into the second stanza and from there the defense was able to silence the Lebanon Valley attack.

Sydney Hyder registered six saves in goal for the Fords to claim her second victory of the season while Chloe Baro made five saves in a losing effort for the Dutchmen.

Looking to extend its winning streak, Haverford heads to Wesley College for its first road contest of the season on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
