15th-ranked Fords blank visiting Red Devils

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The 15th-ranked Haverford College field hockey team continued its unblemished start to the season, rolling to a 3-0 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Dickinson College on Saturday at sunny Swan Field.

The Fords (4-0, 1-0 Centennial) received goals from three different players in registering the shutout over the Red Devils (3-3, 0-1) who were held without a shot in the second half of the conference opener for each team.

Brenna Boehman opened the scoring in the first half notching her first collegiate goal on an unassisted marker in the game's 19th minute. The goal proved to be the game-winner but scores from Mary Hobbs and Alyssa Mayo (pictured, right) provided the game's final three-goal cushion.

Each team registered scoring chances in the early going with Haverford goalie Sydney Hyder and Dickinson's Katy Schlechtweg picking up saves to keep the game scoreless.

The game turned on Boehman's tally midway through the opening stanza. Haverford followed up the goal with insistent pressure in the Red Devils' end resulting in Hobbs' second goal of the season, an unassisted score at the 25:22 mark.

By the time Mayo scored, in the 51st minute, the Fords had taken command of possession, poking away the few Dickinson rushes into its offensive end as well as accumulating an 8-0 advantage in shots over the final 35 minutes.

Hyder picked up the win in goal for the Fords stopping both of Dickinson's shots which were on target. For Dickinson, Schlechtweg took the loss allowing all three goals while picking p seven saves. Fuss relieved Schlechtweg after Hobbs' goal and saved the only shot on frame that she faced.

The Fords' dominance of possession time resulted in a 16-6 edge in penalty corners and a 17-5 edge in shots.

Challenges continue for the Fords in the next week as they welcome Muhlenberg College to Swan for a conference contest Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., then receive a visit from fourth-ranked Messiah College on Thursday at 5 p.m. in a non-conference battle of nationally-ranked teams.
