HAVERFORD, Pa. – A goal from Megan Holt off a penalty corner with time expired in the first half propelled Haverford College's 12th-ranked field hockey team to a 2-0 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at Swan Field. The victory was the second shutout in a row for the Fords.

Holt's goal provided Haverford (5-0, 2-0 Centennial) with a halftime lead following an opening 35 minutes during which Muhlenberg (4-2, 1-1) held a 6-5 advantage in shots and dictated much of the opening 35 minutes of play.

Mary Hobbs added an insurance goal for Haverford 13 minutes into a second half which saw the Fords overpower the Mules with a 15-2 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Christie Quake earned the assist on Holt's game-winner and Sarah Crist picked up the assist on Hobbs' goal.

Much of the first half was played in Haverford's defensive end as the Mules pressured the Fords' defense. The back line, led by Quake, Holt, Crist, Brooke Kelly and Sarah Waldis, kept five of the six shots from Muhlenberg away from goalkeeper Sydney Hyder who stopped the only shot that made it through to the netminder.

Head coach Jackie Cox's halftime adjustments helped turn the tide in the final 35 minutes as Muhlenberg was on the defensive for nearly all of the game's second half.

Hyder (4-0) finished with a pair of saves to earn the win. Muhlenberg's Kristen Dornenburg (4-2) took the loss in goal after surrendering two goals while making three saves.

The shutout of the Mules comes on the heels of a 3-0 win over Dickinson College on Sept. 15 in the Centennial opener for both teams.

Wednesday night's game was a postponement of a match-up originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, giving the Fords little rest as they welcome No. 4 Messiah College to Swan Field on Thursday at 5 p.m. in a national top-20 contest.
