Holt's goals rally Fords past Misericordia

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Megan Holt scored a pair of second-half goals less than six minutes apart to help rally Haverford College's 10th-ranked field hockey team past visiting Misericordia University in a 2-1 Fords victory Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Swan Field.

Haverford (7-1) owned a 41-4 advantage in shots and a 19-3 edge in shots on goal but Holt's third and fourth tallies of the year rallied the Fords past a plucky Misericordia (2-7) squad which had broken a scoreless tie with a goal in the early minutes of second-half action.

The Cougars' Lindsay Hischak notched her second of the year with the game's initial goal, coming off a penalty corner, not even two minutes into the second period.

Holt was able to find the equalizer for the Fords five minutes later at the 41:24 mark, sweeping in from outside the top right of the circle, deking a defender and getting off a low shot that snaked through a sea of sticks to beat Misericordia goalie Grace Riker who had kept her team in the game with four first-half saves.

Holt struck again six minutes later and from almost the same spot on the field. Jen DiMaria's shot off a corner insertion was saved by Riker but the rebound bounced out toward the top right of the circle. Holt snared the loose ball, made a quick move past a defender and got a shot off that snuck inside the near post before Riker could slide over for another save.

Riker was under siege much of the second half but held firm in allowing just the two goals while making 13 saves over the final 35 minutes. She finished with 17 saves in taking the loss. Haverford goalie Sydney Hyder picked up two saves, both in the first half, to earn her sixth win of the year against only one loss.

After a three-game non-conference stretch the Fords -- 2-0 within Centennial Conference action -- jump back into league play with their next three games beginning with a trip to Gettysburg College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
