Field Hockey Stopped By WAC, 2-0

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College field hockey team saw its three-game winning streak stopped by the Washington College Shorewomen Thursday at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium by a score of 2-0.

The Fords had the first scoring chance in the second minute as junior Natalie Leslie had penalty corner. Off the corner, senior Allison Martin slapped a shot in the circle, but Washington College's Sadie Robertson secured a save. The home team changed momentum, pushing the game into its offensive zone with four penalty corners and three shots over the next 19 minutes of game action.

In the 21st minute, Elizabeth Davis gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead. Davis took a pass from Allison Remenapp and blasted a shot attempt that deflected off a Haverford defender into the back of the cage. Sophomore Elena Veale tried to tie the contest in the 32nd minute, but her shot was blocked.

Haverford recorded its first scoring threat of the second half off a corner from Leslie, but Martin's shot was blocked. After a timeout by the Fords, Martin again came close to tying the match, but her try was just wide.

Washington College added an insurance goal in the 59th minute. Alli Dudley picked up the loose ball off a shot from Remenapp and slipped the ball past Haverford goalie Lindsey Lopes. The Fords had two more chances in the game, but couldn't get one past Roberston.

Head coach Jackie Cox's team fell to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference while Washington College improved to 9-7 this season and 4-5 in conference play. The Fords are in fourth place in the conference playoff standings behind No. 4 Franklin and Marshall (9-0), No. 6 Ursinus (8-1) and Muhlenberg (7-2).

Haverford will finish the regular season vs. Swarthmore on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). Before the match, the team will honor its seven seniors, Boehman, Martin, Lopes, Sydney Cone, Rachel Grunden, Kelly Hancock and Sarah Waldis. The Class of 2016 has qualified for three Centennial Conference playoff berths and has 43 wins in its four years. The group also went to the conference finals in 2012 and has won at least 10 games three times.
