BALTIMORE – The Haverford College field hockey team took down Johns Hopkins on the road in Baltimore on Friday night. The Fords got a first half goal from Paige Carson to go up 1-0. That goal held up behind a stout defensive effort in Danielle Rette's shutout.

Carson's seventh of the season proved to be the game winner. Haverford improves to 6-7 and 2-4 in the Centennial Conference slate while Johns Hopkins falls to 6-7 and 2-4 in the Centennial slate.

The Fords got on the board with a goal in the eighth minute of action. Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Greta Helvie saved a Stephanie Terrell shot in the circle, but the deflection of her pads found the waiting stick of Carson, who hammered it home for her seventh goal of the year and her second game-winner of the 2016 season.

At the Half, Haverford and Johns Hopkins were tied in shots at 4-4 and the Blue Jays held a 4-0 advantage in corners. Rette had one save at the half.

Haverford faced perhaps its biggest tests in the final minutes of the contest. Corners from Johns Hopkins were able to keep Haverford on its toes in the narrow contest.

Johns Hopkins made the move to go up an attacker by pulling Helvie in the 66th minute of action. The move proved to be fruitless, despite a revamped offensive effort from the hosts with the extra attacker. Clare Kavanagh inserted two corners within seconds of each other and Morgan Pothast had a pair of strong scoring attempts that were saved by Rette, who proved to be a force down the stretch to insure the conference tally in the win column while picking up her third shutout of the year.

Haverford's defense again excelled against a tough opponent when it mattered most as Haverford finished with 11 shots to 12 for the Blue Jays. The Fords took the victory despite Johns Hopkins holding an 8-2 corner advantage.

Haverford will next return to action on Wednesday up Lancaster Avenue in a Bi-Co showdown with Bryn Mawr. The pass back for the midweek Centennial Conference contest is slated for 4:00 p.m.
