Late Goal Hands Field Hockey 1-0 Win over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College field hockey team (7-8, 2-6 CC) picked up a Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel (2-13, 0-8 CC) on Saturday evening at Gill Stadium, prevailing by a 1-0 final score thanks to a late goal from Zoey Despines, who tallied the first goal of her career following a penalty corner in the 58th minute of action.

The Fords earned a penalty corner in the 11th minute, but Holly Vincent had her shot blocked. The next time the Fords threatened came in the 20th minute, as Nami York inserted a penalty corner opportunity and Vincent had a pair of shot attempts blocked. At the half, the two teams remained scoreless despite the one-sided offensive showing from the Fords through the first 30 minutes of play.

Haverford fired off frame twice in the 43rd minute, with Amy Kim having her attempt blocked and Despines missing wide just moments later. A flurry of shots opened the fourth period, with Kim again missing wide and Vincent having her shot sail wide in the 49th minute.

With one last effort to score before a potential overtime, Erica Pardón inserted a penalty corner to the top of the circle. After a few crisp passes and strong defense from McDaniel, the ball started to trickle away before Despines corralled a bouncing ball and fired towards the far post, setting off a celebration as Haverford did just enough to come away with a huge road win.

Lindsey Darby faced just two shots, with neither coming on the cage, as she earned the shutout. Haverford had a dominating edge in the offensive rhythm of the contest, earning 11 penalty corners while not surrendering a single offensive corner to the Green Terror. Haverford fired eight shots to just two for the hosts.

Haverford has now won four consecutive matchups with the Green Terror. The Fords were making their second consecutive trip to McDaniel after previously not visiting Westminster since the 2018 season.

Field Hockey now hosts Muhlenberg under the lights on Wednesday, October 25. First pass is slated for 7 p.m. on Swan Field as the Centennial Conference regular season reaches its final week.
