Field Hockey Places 24 On NFHCA National Academic Squad

MANAHWKIN, N.J. — Twenty-four Haverford College field hockey student-athletes have been named to the 2024 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad, the organization announced on Wednesday morning. The annual honor, sponsored by OPA Winning Teams, recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher through the fall semester, nominated by their NFHCA member head coaches. 

Haverford's honorees include Alya Bakir, Brynn Bickel, Amelia Bredbenner, Louisa Coughlin, Lindsey Darby, Zoey Despines, Kendall Fleet, Caroline Frost, Ava Giardino, Avrey Goodgame, Lily Gover, Steph Ionescu, Mena Kazista, Anna Keneally, Amy Kim, Vy Le, Rachel Marlin, Erica Pardón, Ileana Rodriguez, Carolina Sanchez, Abigail Trapp, Lindsey Turner, Holly Vincent and Naomi York.

Among them, Despines, Kim, Le, Marlin and Rodriguez earned the recognition for the fourth consecutive year.

Haverford tied with Middlebury College for the second-most selections in Division III, trailing only Mount Holyoke College, which led the nation with 25 honorees.

In total, more than 1,880 student-athletes from over 150 institutions were named to the National Academic Squad, including 310 four-year honorees.

Three prestigious Division III academic awards are yet to be unveiled  — the NFHCA Scholars of Distinction will be announced on February 14, the NFHCA National Academic Team awards on February 18, and concluding with the announcement of the National Scholar-Athlete on February 20.

The mission of the organization is to champion, strengthen, and celebrate field hockey coaches and the game. The NFHCA strives to cultivate and recognize the professional contributions of its membership and to foster and promote the growth of the sport. The NFHCA is responsible for providing a recognizable presence and voice in regard to legislation affecting the sport as well as interscholastic and intercollegiate programs.
