Men’s fencing posts 4-1 record at conference tournament

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Haverford College men's fencing team went 4-1 at the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) "A" vs. "C" tournament Sunday at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Haverford defeated Stevens, 15-12, earlier in the season, but the Ducks got the best of HC Sunday, claiming a 16-11 victory. Stevens pulled off seven one-touch victories as Haverford's epee and sabre squads both fell 6-3. The foil squad earned a hard-fought 5-4 win, with the key bout coming in the first round when Andrew Soule-Hinds delivered Tony Worthington his only loss on the day. The split in season wins between the two team's sets the stage for this year's MACFA championship, pitting defending champion Haverford against 2009 champion Stevens.

Two other strong teams in contention for MACFA medals participated in Sunday's tournament, but neither Cornell University nor West Point were able to take down the Fords, as both fell, 17-10 and 16-11, respectively. Haverford finished the day by cruising to wins over New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Yeshiva University.

Leading scorers on the day included Sam Levinson, 8-3, in the foil; Oliver Elbert, 10-3, in the sabre; and James Nieuwland, 12-3, in epee.

Both the men's and women's fencing teams will resume competition Sunday at the Johns Hopkins University Invitational.
