Assistant fencing coach Davis named Philadelphia Inquirer Hero of the Week

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College assistant coach Marshal Davis was featured as the Hero of the Week in the June 11 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

As an undergraduate at the University of Florida, Marshall signed up for a bone marrow registry during a Gift of Life drive that was held on campus. Nearly a decade later in 2009, Davis received a phone call stating that he was needed to donate his bone marrow to Jacob Kowalik, a five-year-old boy in Chicago with myelodysplasia, often a precursor to leukemia. Two years after his donation, Davis went to Chicago in April to visit Jacob, who is now seven.

This season with Haverford, Davis helped the men's fencing team win its second consecutive Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MAFCA) championship. The women's team recorded its fourth consecutive top-five finish at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association championship by coming in fourth. With Davis' assistance, head coach Chris Spencer was named the MAFCA coach of the year.
