HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's fencing team overcame a tough Lafayette College lineup, 17-10, in the last contest of the day to grab a victory at the Haverford Invitational held on Saturday, Nov.19 in Alumni Field House. The win enabled the Fords to end the afternoon of Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association competition with a 1-3 record on the day.
Strong performances by the foil squad, 8-1, and the sabre squad, 6-3, led the Fords to capture the victory over Lafayette.
Earlier in the day, Haverford bowed to a tough Drew University team, 18-9, despite a great effort from the sabreists who went 8-1.
Next up, Haverford engaged in a tight battle with Rutgers University before falling, 14-13. The sabre squad once again did their part registering a 9-0 mark during the contest.
Prior to the Lafayette bout to close the contest, the Fords faced Cornell University. The sabreists came up with another 9-0 effort but Haverford fell, 19-8.
Junior James Nieuwland finished with a 10-2 record and senior Andrew Bostick was not far behind with a 9-3 day to spearhead the tenacious effort for the Fords. Max Findley led all freshmen, and foilists, with a 7-5 record on the day.
The Fords take a break from action until Jan. 22 when they take the short trip to the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational.
