BALTIMORE, Md. - The Haverford College men's fencing team competed at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, taking on Rutgers University, Lafayette College, Cornell University, and Drew University in Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) round-robin action.
The Fords were undefeated on the day, bringing their conference record to 12-1 for the season.
Opening strong against a seasoned Rutgers team, the Fords swept the foil, 9-0, and dominated in sabre, 7-2, while the young epee squad persevered despite falling 4-5. The pattern repeated itself against Lafayette and Cornell, with the foils and sabres carrying the wins.
But in the last round of the tournament a resurgent Drew team revenged earlier losses to Haverford in foil and sabre, and it was a valiant stand by the epee squad, capped by co-captain James Nieuwland's bout victory with the score knotted at 13-all, that won the match for the Fords.
Leading scorers on the day were Max Findley in the foil with an impressive 9-1 record, Aaron Ruby with a stellar 5-0 result in sabre, while Nieuwland led all epeeists at 6-3. Showing great improvement on the season were Joshua Nadel in the sabre, and freshman Kailash Faris in the épée, each winning five bouts on the day.
