WALTHAM, Mass. – The Haverford College men's fencing team traveled this past Saturday to Brandeis University to compete in the Sollee Invitational against a group of teams from the Northeast.

The Fords defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Boston College, while losing to Brown University, New York University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and host Brandeis.

Freshmen Eric Gardner and Aldis Gamble had breakout days, each for the first time posting winning records at collegiate tournaments. Leading all Haverford scorers on the day was epeeist Gardner, who in fencing every match without being subbed out won 12 bouts while losing six. Gardner displayed improvement in focus, confidence and stamina, and was undefeated against Brandeis.

Foilist Gamble, stepping in off the bench throughout the day, went 6-5, showing a tremendous improvement in speed, power, and application of athleticism.

Leading the foil squad was junior co-captain Max Findley who went 10-5 on the day including a 5-2 win over 2013 NCAA Division I national finalist Julian Cardillo from Brandeis. Darwin Keung posted three wins for the sabre squad, while freshman epeeist Jake Bassinder also had a strong day at 8-10.

The Haverford fencers will travel Sunday to Drew University for a Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) tournament against the University of Virginia, University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, and Navy.
