Standout Stars Highlight Men's Fencing at Sollee Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Haverford College men's fencing team traveled to the Sollee Invitational on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this past weekend. Although the Fords were unable to find any team victories on the weekend, Haverford had three individuals finish with winning records to highlight the action.

Max Findley (foil) and Eric Gardner (epee) each recorded 11 wins in their 15 bouts over the five rounds of competition. Gardner won all three of his bouts against Brandeis and New York University. He also won two of his three bouts against MIT and Brown. Findley went 3-0 against Brandeis, Boston College and MIT, starting his day off a perfect 9-0. He would also capture two matches in the team's final bout of the day against NCAA Division I Brown.

Jake Bassinder won 10 bouts on the day, making epee the Fords' most successful weapon of the weekend. The Fords' epeeist won all three bouts against MIT, while also taking two wins in matches against Brandeis, Boston College and Brown. Bassinder captured an additional bout against NYU. Bassinder and Gardner led the Fords to a 2-3 day overall in that particular weapon, coming up with 5-4 wins against MIT and Brandeis. The epee squad was edged by NYU and Brown by that same 5-4 margin, while taking three of the nine bouts against Boston College.

Foil had its strongest showing of the day against MIT with a 6-3 victory in the discipline. However, MIT overcame the Fords' wins in both the epee and foil weapons with a strong showing in sabre. Against MIT, each foilist secured bout wins for the Fords. In addition to Findley taking care of business in all three matches, Aldis Gamble went 2-1 against the hosts. Devin Louis also secured a win in the opening round.

Joshua Nadel led the sabre squad to six of its 11 victories on the afternoon. His day included a perfect 3-0 mark against Boston College as the Fords nearly prevailed in that weapon before falling by a 5-4 margin. Ching Li added three more victories to his weapon, while Ben Cattau added wins against Brown and NYU.

Men's fencing will now travel to Baltimore for this weekend's MACFA "A" vs. "C" competition. The Fords' slate is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on Sunday, February 8.
