Men's Fencing Places Fourth at MACFA Championships

EASTON, Pa. – The Haverford College men's fencing team finished fourth overall at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Championships hosted on the campus of Lafayette over the weekend. Haverford finished the day with a MACFA medalist in each of the three weapons for the first time since the 2012 season.

Entering the weekend as the defending MACFA Squad Champions, the Haverford sabrists came up just short of a repeat as they were edged out by Johns Hopkins in the final standings. John Hare qualified to the direct elimination bouts from the team competition and placed fifth overall after he made the quarterfinal round. The sophomore is now a two-time MACFA medalist after placing second a season ago.

Kadan Lottick was Haverford's highest placing individual as he was third overall in the epee direct elimination draw. Lottick advanced to the semifinals to earn his first MACFA medal. The Fords' foilists placed sixth overall in their squad standings.

The foilists placed fifth in the squad standings for Haverford. Yan Yan Xie matched Lottick's third place finish with his placement in the foil direct elimination draw. Like his teammate, Xie advanced to the semifinals and finished his day as Haverford's first medalist in foil since Max Findley '15 place fourth during his senior season.

Men's fencing will return to Lafayette this coming weekend for the NCAA Regional Championship that is set to get underway at 9 a.m. in Easton, Pa. Xie is a returning regional finalist in that event and leads a contingent of nine qualifiers and one alternate into Saturday's championships.
