HAVERFORD, Pa. – Competing inside the Andy Kates Fencing Salle for the first time this season, the Haverford College men's fencing team placed third at the Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational on Saturday. This weekend's bouts also counted as the MACFA "C" results. The Fords soundly defeated William & Mary and Maryland. They were defeated by conference foe Johns Hopkins and came up just one win short against Navy.

The defeat against Navy came despite the Fords winning both the foil and sabre matchups. Alton Wiggers starred for the foil squad as he racked up 10 victories against just two defeats. The foil squad was perfect against William & Mary and Maryland on its way to a combined 26-10 record. Wiggers led the foilists with 10 victories as he went unbeaten in three different rounds of fencing, also notching a win against Johns Hopkins. Just behind him was Jack Leighninger who was 9-3 overall. In addition to his perfect opening and closing rounds, he notched two wins against the Naval Academy. Carter Langen made it three Haverford foilists with winning records as he added a victory against Navy to finish at 7-5 overall.

Sabre gave Johns Hopkins its toughest test of the afternoon and tallied a 23-13 overall record with five different fencers winning bouts in the deep lineup. First year Nicholas Conroy led the sabrists with an 8-1 record as he suffered his only defeat against Johns Hopkins as a late substitution into the final bout of that round. John Hare posted a 2-1 record against the rival Blue Jays and finished his day 6-1 overall. Captain Gabriel Braun (4-2) and David Parker (4-3) also turned in strong performances.

Braun was a combined 4-0 between the bouts against William & Mary and Navy. Parker tallied a 2-1 mark against Navy, losing his only bout that round in a four out of five touch bout. He also got into the win column against Johns Hopkins and won his lone bout against W&M. Kagan Harris jumped into the lineup for all three bouts during the final round and came away with a victory over Maryland.

Raynor Bond-Ashpole led Haverford's foilists with five victories as he posted winning records against W&M and Maryland. Captain Kadan Lottick also boasted a winning 4-3 mark as he was perfect against W&M and won his only bout against Navy as the Fords tried to rally for the victory. Adrian Ballard matched his captain's total with four victories, taking two bouts off of both W&M and Maryland. First year Adrian Velonis continued to make great strides and was rewarded with his first collegiate win during the squad's 5-4 victory over Maryland.

Men's fencing will return to the Andy Kates Fencing Salle in two weeks for its final competition before the winter break as the Fords host the Tri-Co Invitational on Saturday, December 1. Fencing that day is set to get underway at 11 a.m.
