POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Haverford College men's fencing team went 5-3 at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday to open the team's dual schedule. The Fords picked up victories against Denison, Incarnate Word, Yeshiva, Lafayette, and Hunter while suffering setbacks to Sacred Heart, Vassar, and Stevens. In the close team battles, Haverford started the day with a hard-fought 14-13 setback against Sacred Heart but reversed that score in its favor when matched up with Incarnate Word.

The sabre squad shined for the Fords as it won seven of the eight weapon squad matches. The only blemish was a tough 5-4 setback against Vassar but the squad posted a 48-24 overall record. John Hare led those efforts as he went 22-1 in his season debut, posting a perfect record in seven of the eight rounds of fencing.

Nicholas Conroy was right behind him with an 18-3 record as he was subbed out during the round against Yeshiva. Conroy won his first nine bouts of the day and finished with an unblemished record during five of his seven rounds in the lineup. Neville Linden supported his squad's efforts with seven victories, including three different rounds where he went 2-1. One of those rounds came during the 14-13 victory over Incarnate Word where an 8-1 showing from the sabre squad helped save the Fords' victory. Aaron Xu added a win to the lineup when he filled in for Conroy during the squad victory against Yeshiva.

Jack Leighninger led Haverford's foilists with a 16-5 record. The senior closed his day with a 15-3 record over the final six rounds, including a key 3-0 showing against Incarnate Word. Carter Langen added 12 more bout wins to the foilists as that squad's 9-0 performance against Yeshiva turned the tide in that Haverford victory. Co-captain Alton Wiggers went 3-0 against Denison to highlight his six bout wins, while William Moore was a perfect 3-0 during the team's rally against Yeshiva.

Haverford's epee squad posted squad victories against both Denison and Lafayette. Co-captain Kadan Lottick was 3-0 during each of those rounds while also closing his day with another unblemished record against Hunter. Lottick led the epeeists with 14 wins on the day. Edward Shin reached a double-digit win total with 11 bout victories. Shin reached that mark by winning his last four bouts of the day. Jack Crump picked up his first collegiate victory in the matchup against Lafayette as he subbed in for Adrian Velonis during his only turn out of the lineup.

Men's fencing will now return to the Alumni Field House this Saturday, November 16 for the Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational in what will be the team's only home bouts of the year outside of the Alumni Bouts/Reception in January. The Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational will also serve as the MACFA "C" bouts on the men's side with action set to get underway at 10 a.m.
