Men's Fencing Takes Down Lafayette & Sacred Heart at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College men's fencing team continued to challenge itself with a grueling schedule during the month of January as the Fords competed in the Philadelphia Invitational hosted at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. Haverford exacted some revenge from a previous defeat against Sacred Heart during the fall portion of the schedule and also widened its margin of victory in a second win against Lafayette this season.

The Fords dominated Lafayette in their first win of the day, a resounding 22-5 victory. Haverford made it two straight triumphs a round later with a 15-12 win against Sacred Heart thanks in large part to a 9-0 showing from the sabre squad. Haverford sabrists John Hare, Nicholas Conroy, and Neville Linden were each unblemished in the matchup with Sacred Heart to overcome slight deficits in epee and foil.

Hare and Conroy finished the day with identical 9-6 records to lead the Fords. For the second straight week, Hare defeated Penn's honorable mention All-American Adam Green. Conroy was a perfect 6-0 during Haverford's team victories and posted a 2-1 record against rival Johns Hopkins to begin his day. In addition to Linden's victories over Sacred Heart, Kagan Harris notched a win during the triumph against Lafayette.

Epeeist and co-captain Kadan Lottick was the third Haverford fencer to post a winning mark as he recorded eight victories in 14 bouts. Fencing every round, Lottick defeated opponents from every school, including two victories against Penn, Lafayette, and New York University. Adrian Velonis also defeated a foe from Penn and was a perfect 3-0 against Lafayette while Edward Shin contributed two key bout wins against Sacred Heart. Raynor Bond-Ashpole also added to the win against Lafayette with two victories while Jack Crump got into the lineup during the win against the Leopards.

Carter Langen led the foil squad with seven wins. He joined a total of five Fords, including squadmate and co-captain Alton Wiggers, in posting a 3-0 records during the convincing victory versus Lafayette. Langen added two more crucial victories in the hard-fought battle against Sacred Heart. Jack Leighninger built his resume throughout the day with one victory during each of Haverford's last four rounds while William Moore also secured a bout win against Lafayette.

Men's fencing will wrap up the month this coming Saturday, January 25 as the team hosts its annual Alumni Bouts/Banquet starting at 11 a.m. inside the Andy Kates Fencing Salle. Haverford returns to the competition strips on Saturday, February 1 with the Sollee Invitational which will be hosted by Brandeis.
