Foil Squad Shines At Philadelphia Invitational

Foil Squad Shines At Philadelphia Invitational
PHILADELPHIA - The Haverford College men's fencing team competed this past Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational, held annually at Penn. Showing improvement across the board against Division I opponents, the Fords defeated conference rivals Lafayette, 18-9, and had a narrow loss to Sacred Heart, 13-14. However, the story of the tournament was the foil squad's continued high performance, which extended to a 5-4 win over the host Quakers in the sixth round.

The foil squad was 3-2 overall, with the win against Penn following after a win against Sacred Heart, 6-3, reversing the score of their loss to the Pioneers earlier in the season. Foilists Michael Pyo (9-5) and Jax Wittenberg (8-6) led all fencers' win percentages on the day.

Epeeists Danny Carvalho and Edward Shin led their squad with identical 6-7 records, while sabrist Neville Linden showed his promise and improvement with four wins total, including an upset against Penn's Enzo Bergamo. The Ford's sabre squad, composed entirely of walk-ons, had their second squad win of the season versus an NCAA opponent in a boisterous match with Lafayette in the last round.

The men's fencers will next compete at the Sollee Invitational this coming Sunday, held this year at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
