Men's Fencing Earns Two Wins at Drew Invitational

MADISON, N.J. – Haverford Men's Fencing posted victories over Wheaton (Mass.) and host Drew at the Drew Invitational on Sunday at the Simon Forum. The Fords delivered solid performances against several familiar MACFA rivals and other opponents they are likely to encounter throughout the season.

Haverford opened the day with a close matchup against Stevens, ultimately falling 14-13. The Fords' foil and epee squads secured 6-3 wins in their respective bouts. In foil, Michael Pyo, Andrew Strayer, and Dean Myers each went 2-1. For epee, Eric Chen posted a 3-0 record, Kenji Gullo went 2-1, and Vivek Veluvali added a victory. Greg Roumiantsev contributed a win in sabre.

After a bye in the second round, Haverford defeated Wheaton 18-9 in the third round, highlighted by a dominant 9-0 sweep in epee. Jack Greff led the way with a 3-0 performance in sabre, with Patel adding a win to the tally. Henry Fedonchik achieved a perfect 3-0 in foil, while Myers and Andrew Strayer added individual wins.

Returning to action against Cornell, Haverford fell by a 16-11 margin. The foil squad posted a 5-4 victory, with Fedonchik earning two wins and Myers going undefeated at 3-0. Raphael Yamamoto contributed a 2-1 result in epee, while Chen and Gullo each picked up a win in a narrow 5-4 squad loss. In sabre, Deep Patel rebounded with two wins against the Big Red after being shut out in the previous bout.

In the fifth round against Wagner, the Fords fell 15-12. Haverford collected sabre victories from Greff and Roumianatsev, while Pyo led foil with a flawless 3-0 record. Myers and Strayer also added foil wins, and Chen went 3-0 in epee with Veluvali posting a 2-1 record.

Against Long Island University, the Fords were edged out 16-11. Patel claimed a win in sabre, while Fedonchik and Henry Bishop earned victories for the foil squad, with Pyo again going undefeated at 3-0. Chen and Veluvali each contributed two wins in epee, with Gullo adding another.

Haverford concluded the day with a resounding 19-8 victory over the host Rangers. The Fords showcased their depth with Greff and Patel each securing wins in sabre to edge out a 5-4 result. Foil excelled with a 9-0 sweep, as Myers, Pyo, and Strayer each posted 3-0 records. In epee, Gullo, Chen, and Veluvali all went 2-1.

The Fords will return to action on Sunday, November 10, at Vassar. The competition is set to begin at 10 a.m., with Haverford facing a talented field including the host Brewers, Yeshiva, Hunter, Lafayette, LIU, Stevens, Cleveland State, and Johns Hopkins.
