POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Haverford College men's fencing team competed at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday, picking up key wins over Denison, Drew, Division I Cleveland State, and Hunter to wrap a busy day in Poughkeepsie.
Round 1: Sacred Heart 21, Haverford 6
Haverford picked up three individual wins in Epee, two in sabre, and one in foil. Eric Chen went a perfect 3-0 to lead the epee squad against the Pioneers The Sabre wins came from Deep Patel and Jack Greff, while Dean Myers prevailed in foil.
Round 2: Haverford 21, Denison 6
Against the Big Red, the Fords triumphed in resounding fashion, as the Epee squad went 9-0, foil posted a 7-2 mark, and sabre went 5-4. Kenji Gullo went 3-0, Raphael Yamamoto also was perfect at 3-0, and Vivek Veluvali was unblemished at 3-0 against Denison. The foil squad picked up three wins from Henry Bishop, while Henry Fedonchik and Ezra Weintroub each added two. Greff went 3-0 in sabre, while debutants Osaretin Idahor and Andy Loo each added a victory.
Round 3: Cornell 19, Haverford 8
Haverford earned four wins each across foil and epee against Cornell. Myers added three while Bishop prevailed in one of his matchups to pace foil. The epee squad earned two wins from Chen and once each from Veluvali and Gullo.
Round 4: Vassar 15, Haverford 12
Taking on the host Brewers, Haverford was locked in a tight battle, grabbing a commanding 8-1 win in foil, while epee was narrowly defeated 5-4. Andrew Strayer grabbed three wins, as did Michael Pyo and Myers. A 3-0 mark for Chen was supported by a win from Gullo.
Round 5: LIU 15, Haverford 12
Against the Sharks, Haverford earned two sabre wins, five foil triumphs and five more in epee Sabre earned wins from Greff and Patel, with Strayer adding three in foil to one from Fedonchik and one from Bishop. Gullo added three wins to pace epee, while Veluvali picked up a pair.
Round 6: Haverford 17, Drew 10
For the second consecutive weekend, the Fords picked up a win against a nationally-ranked Drew side. Haverford proved its mettle against the Rangers, with a 5-4 sabre victory, a 6-3 foil win, and a 6-3 epee triumph. Greff went 3-0 for sabre, while Deep Patel and Greg Roumiantsev picked up a win. In foil, Pyo added three victories, with Fedonchik earning two and Myers grabbing a win. Chen was victorious twice for epee, Veluvali notched three wins, and Haverford earned one from Gullo.
Round 7: Haverford 14, Cleveland State 13
Earning a hard-fought victory over Division I Cleveland State, the Fords used a 9-0 foil advantage to take down the Vikings. Pyo, Strayer, and Fedonchik all went a perfect 3-0 against CSU, highlighting the afternoon for the Scarlet and Black, with Haverford earning its separation from its opponents with two victories from Chen in epee and a win from Veluvali. Patel and Roumiantsev were victorious in sabre as the Fords prevailed with no margin for error.
Round 8: Haverford 19, Hunter 8
In the final bout of the day for the Fords, Sabre was victorious by a 5-4 decision, foil prevailed 6-3, and epee went 8-1. Roumiantsev and Idahor grabbed two wins each, as Andy Loo also prevailed to buoy the Fords. The foil squad was led by a 3-0 mark from Pyo, with Bishop grabbing two victories and Weintroub earning one. For epee, Chen and Gullo each notched three wins, with Yamamoto chipping in two.
Haverford now returns to action for another big day of competition on Sunday, November 17 at the MACFA C Round Robin at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
