ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Haverford College men's fencing team competed in its first Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) competition of the 2024-25 season at the United States Naval Academy on Sunday afternoon, securing wins over William & Mary and Maryland in the round-robin competition among MACFA "C" conference members.
Round 1: Haverford 15, Maryland 12
Against the Terrapins, Haverford earned a 7-2 win in epee and an 8-1 victory in foil, while the sabre squad was defeated 9-0. The epee wins were led by a 3-0 performance from Kenji Gullo and 2-1 marks from Eric Chen and Vivek Veluvali. Foil was paced by a 3-0 performance from Michael Pyo, while Andrew Strayer also picked up a pair of wins for a 2-1 mark. Henry Fedonchik notched two wins, and Dean Myers also added a victory to the Haverford column.
Round 2: Johns Hopkins 21, Haverford 6
Facing off with the rival Blue Jays, the Fords earned a key squad win in foil, prevailing 5-4 in a hard-fought battle. The effort was led by 2-1 marks from Fedonchik and Strayer, along with a win from Pyo. Eric Chen also secured an epee win over the Blue Jays' Jorge Gana.
Round 3: Haverford 19, William & Mary 8
Haverford's foil squad dominated the Tribe with a 9-0 shutout, led by perfect 3-0 performances from Henry Bishop, Ezra Weintroub, and Dean Myers. A 3-0 mark from Veluvali then paced epee, with Gullo and Yamamoto contributing wins as the squad edged out a 5-4 decision. William & Mary managed a narrow 5-4 squad win in sabre, despite two wins from Deep Patel and additional victories from Greg Roumiantsev and Jack Greff.
Round 4: Navy 14, Haverford 13
In the final matchup of the day against the host Midshipmen, the Fords showcased their strength with squad wins in both epee and foil. Epee secured a 5-4 victory, with contributions from Chen (two wins), Yamamoto, Gullo, and Veluvali. The foil squad also clinched a 5-4 decision, with two wins each from Myers and Bishop, and one from Weintroub. The sabre squad tallied three wins in a 6-3 defeat, with Greff leading the charge with two victories and Roumiantsev adding another.
With the MACFA slate now underway, Haverford will return to action at its annual home meet, the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational, scheduled for Saturday, December 7, inside Alumni Field House. Action on the strips is set to begin at 10 a.m.
