HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's fencing team hosted its annual home tournament, the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational, inside Alumni Field House on Saturday. The Fords welcomed local rivals Drexel and Swarthmore to campus for the competition, splitting into two squads for round-robin competition.
Round 2
Haverford Red 18, Drexel 9
After an intrasquad matchup in round one, round two featured the Red squad against Drexel. Vivek Veluvali and Jack Lesher represented the epee squad, with Veluvali posting a perfect 3-0 mark despite the squad falling 6-3 to the Dragons. The foil squad delivered a dominant performance, blanking Drexel 9-0. Ezra Weintroub, Dean Myers, and Henry Bishop all recorded flawless 3-0 records. In sabre, the Red squad won 6-3, led by Deep Patel's 3-0 sweep. Prem Bhatt added two victories, while Osaretin Idahor secured one.
Haverford Black 15, Swarthmore 12
In a Tri-Co rivalry matchup, the Black squad edged Swarthmore. In epee, Kenji Gullo notched three wins, and Raphael Yamamoto added two to clinch a 5-4 victory. In foil, Andrew Strayer went 3-0, while Michael Pyo contributed two wins for another narrow 5-4 triumph. The sabre squad mirrored this result, with Andy Loo's three victories and Greg Roumiantsev's two wins securing the third 5-4 decision.
Round 3
Haverford Red 17, Swarthmore 10
Jack Lesher carried the epee squad single-handedly, earning a perfect 3-0 record to secure three crucial points. The foil squad delivered a balanced effort, with two wins each from Myers, Weintroub, and Bishop, resulting in a 6-3 victory over the Garnet. In sabre, Patel and Bhatt each posted 3-0 records, while Idahor contributed a 2-1 effort to seal the match.
Haverford Black 18, Drexel 9
The Black squad closed the day with a commanding victory over Drexel. Epee triumphed 5-4, powered by Gullo's three wins and two from Yamamoto. Foil delivered a 6-3 win, as Strayer and Pyo each went 3-0. The sabre squad capped off the match with a 7-2 win, highlighted by three victories from Jack Greff and two each from Roumiantsev and Loo.
The Fords will now take a break for final exams and the winter holidays. They return to action in January 2025 at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn. The two-day event kicks off on Saturday, January 18, and continues on Sunday, January 19.
