PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College men's fencing team concluded its two-day stint at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, on Sunday at the Tse Center in University City. Action on the strips began early as the Fords faced the host Quakers in the first round of the day and continued through three rounds.
Round One: Penn 23, Haverford 4
Haverford earned three wins from the foil squad and one in epee competition against the Quakers. Andrew Strayer recorded victories over John Cheng and Nicholas Wu, while Dean Myers defeated Luke Zhang. In epee, Eric Chen added a win over Ben Serafin.
Round Two: Yale 23, Haverford 4
Facing its second consecutive Ivy League opponent, the Bulldogs, Haverford repeated their earlier result with three foil wins and one in epee. Myers delivered a 3-0 performance, defeating Nicholas Kim, Vinny Yu, and Josh Shin. Vivek Veluvali secured an epee win with a triumph over Michael Roberts.
Round Five: NJIT 16, Haverford 11
Against the Highlanders, Haverford's standout performance came in foil, where the squad posted a 6-3 victory. Strayer led the charge with three wins, supported by Henry Fedonchik with two and Henry Bishop with one. Veluvali added an epee victory, while the sabre squad saw contributions from Prem Bhatt, Deep Patel, and Jack Greff, who secured two wins.
With a weekend of strong competition behind them, the Fords will take lessons learned from competing against some of the nation's top programs into another challenging slate. The schedule resumes on Sunday, January 26, when Haverford travels to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State Invitational. The Fords are set to face Penn State, Penn, North Carolina, Columbia, Duke, and Yale.
