Men's Fencing Earns Three Wins at MACFA "B" vs. "C" Round Robin

HOBOKEN, N.J. — The Haverford College men's fencing team recorded strong wins over Hunter, Army and Yeshiva, while narrowly falling to Division I NJIT and host Stevens in MACFA "B" vs. "C" round-robin action Sunday afternoon at Canavan Arena on the Stevens campus.

Round 1: Haverford 26, Hunter 1
The Fords opened the day with a dominant victory over Hunter, sweeping sabre and epee with 9-0 scores while securing an 8-1 win in foil. Deep Patel, Andy Loo and Greg Roumiantsev each won against a shorthanded Hawks sabre squad. In foil, Andrew Strayer and Dean Myers posted 2-0 records, while Henry Bishop added two wins of his own. The epee squad saw Eric Chen, Vivek Veluvali and Ezra Weintroub each go 3-0 to complete the rout.

Round 2: Haverford 16, Army 11
Against the Black Knights of Army West Point, Haverford excelled in foil (8-1) and epee (7-2), while the sabre squad fell 8-1. In foil, Michael Pyo and Myers each went 3-0, with Bishop finishing 2-1. The epee squad was led by Chen and Veluvali, who notched three wins apiece, while Weintroub contributed one. Haverford's lone sabre victory came from Ryotaro Sakazaki, marking his return to the lineup.

Round 3: Stevens 20, Haverford 7
Facing a strong Stevens squad, Haverford's highlight was a 6-3 foil win, while the Ducks took 9-0 and 8-1 victories in sabre and epee, respectively. Myers remained unbeaten at 3-0, Pyo went 2-1, and Strayer added a win in foil. Veluvali secured Haverford's lone epee victory.

Round 4: NJIT 17, Haverford 10
Taking on Division I NJIT, the Fords once again leaned on their foil squad, which delivered a 6-3 victory. The epee squad fought hard but fell 6-3, while sabre dropped an 8-1 decision. Pyo posted a 2-1 record, Myers remained undefeated at 3-0, and Strayer added a win in foil. Chen earned two epee victories, with Veluvali adding another. Jack Greff notched Haverford's lone sabre win.

Round 5: Haverford 21, Yeshiva 6
In their final matchup against Yeshiva, the Fords dominated with 9-0 sweeps in epee and foil, while sabre fell 6-3. In epee, Chen, Weintroub and Veluvali each went undefeated against a depleted Yeshiva side that featured just one fencer. The foil trio of Pyo, Strayer and Bishop also recorded perfect 3-0 records. In sabre, Greff went 2-1, while Patel added a victory.

Up next: 
The men's fencing team will host its annual alumni matches and banquet Saturday, Feb. 22, with alumni bouts beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a reception. Haverford returns to intercollegiate competition Sunday, March 2, at the MACFA Championships, hosted by Drew University.
