MADISON, N.J. - The Haverford College men's fencing team delivered a strong showing at the Mid-Atlantic College Fencing Association (MACFA) Championships at Drew University on Sunday afternoon, finishing sixth overall out of 13 teams. The foil squad earned silver for the second consecutive season, the epee squad secured a fourth-place finish, and the sabre squad placed seventh.
The format was a round-robin of 13 schools in IFA format (one bout per fencer per school, totaling nine bouts per match). Based on those team results, 16 fencers in each weapon were chosen to compete in the individual portion of the day.
The foil squad secured its second consecutive MACFA silver, tying Hopkins with 29 wins in 36 bouts. However, Hopkins claimed the title with an 82-78 advantage in indicators. Dean Myers went 9-3 in the "A" pool, Michael Pyo went 9-3 in the "B" pool, and Andrew Strayer was 11-1 in the "C" pool.
All three advanced to the individual rounds, with Pyo falling to NJIT's Aidan Doctor, 15-10, in the Round of 16. Myers and Strayer had the unique opportunity of facing off against each other in the Round of 16, with Myers advancing 15-9 before falling to Ben Hergert of Lafayette. Myers finished sixth overall, with Strayer 12th and Pyo 14th.
The epee squad went 25-9, edging out Cornell for fourth place overall. Eric Chen went 8-4 in the "A" pool, Vivek Veluvali went 6-5 in the "B" pool, and Kenji Gullo went 9-2 in the "C" pool.
Gullo and Chen each advanced to the individual round, with Gullo upended by Ethan Insler of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16. Chen defeated Eric Montesi of William & Mary, 15-11, before falling in the quarterfinals to eventual silver medalist Andrew Yorovchak of Stevens. Chen placed sixth overall, while Gullo finished 12th.
The sabre squad went 16-20, placing seventh, ahead of Navy (eighth) and William & Mary (ninth). Jack Greff fenced in the "A" pool, posting a 6-6 record, while Deep Patel competed in the "B" pool, going 3-7. Ryotaro Sakazaki and Greg Roumiantsev split time in the "C" pool; Sakazaki went 1-1, and Roumiantsev finished 1-6. Greff advanced to the individual tableau, where he was matched up with Cole Leonard of Cornell in the Table of 16. Leonard prevailed by a 15-10 final. Greff finished ninth overall.
With the full team season now complete, select Fords will return to action on Saturday, March 8, at the NCAA Regional Championships in Madison, N.J., competing in the Mid-Atlantic/South region for NCAA Championship bids.
