UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Haverford College sophomore men's fencer Eric Chen concluded his two-day run at the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships on Friday morning, competing in the final two rounds of five-touch bouts in men's epee at Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility.
Chen finished 22nd overall in men's epee, adding a fourth-round victory over Cleveland State's Jesse Ndjeka to his record on day two. He secured six bout wins in total over the two-day competition. The championship field featured 24 of the nation's top fencers, with competitors from powerhouse programs such as Notre Dame, Columbia, and Harvard.
The epeeist is Haverford's first NCAA championship qualifier since 2010, when Ben Van Son placed 21st in foil. His performance marks a major milestone for the program under first-year head coach Christine Griffith. The sophomore previously placed fourth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, earning his bid to the national championships with Haverford's highest finish ever at a regional meet.
A product of Ellicott City, Maryland, Chen was also named a first-team USFCA All-Mid-Atlantic/South Region and Division III All-Region selection earlier this week. Haverford sits 23rd in the team standings, powered by Chen's six bout wins during the round robin.
