Stossel nets two goals to give Fords first win of season, 2-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Max Stossel's two goals led the Haverford College men's soccer team to its first win of the season, 2-0, over Penn State University Harrisburg on Monday afternoon. The win was also the first for Head Coach Bill Brady in his first season with the Scarlet and Black.

After attempting just three shots in Tuesday's season opener Haverford (1-1) took a more aggressive approach, attempting 21 with nine on goal. The Fords attacked the goal early and often and it paid off as Stossel found the back of the net in the 17th minute. Matt Wetherell fed Stossel in the top left corner of the box. Stossel's shot deflected off a Lions defender and the ball flew past goalkeeper Toan Ngo who slipped as he tried to make the save.

In the 46th minute Stossel gave the Fords some breathing room. Matt Gorski passed to Stossel who bent his shot from the left goal line into the right side of the goal.

Defensively, Haverford kept the pressure on Penn State-Harrisburg (1-2). The Lions took just 12 shots in total and four on goal. The Fords held PSU-Harrisburg to just five in the second half. In two games HC has held its two opponents to a meager 24 shots and one goal.

Goalkeeper Jamey Appelgate picked up his second career shutout, stopping four PSU-Harrisburg shots.

Haverford remains home this weekend when they host the Jimmy Mills Tournament at Walton Field. Cabrini College faces Moravian College at 1 p.m. and the Fords take on Curry (Mass.) College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, Cabrini plays Curry at 1 p.m. and HC takes on Moravian at 3:30 p.m.
