Men's soccer settles for double-overtime tie with #10 Johns Hopkins

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team nearly pulled off the upset of the season Saturday afternoon, but in the end had to settle for a 0-0 double-overtime tie against 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University in Centennial Conference action at Walton Field.

The 2010 Fords (3-1-2, 1-0-1 CC) have already earned more points, four, in conference action than they did during the 2009 campaign. Hopkins (6-1-2, 0-1-1 CC), the top pick in the preseason conference coaches poll and ranked 10th nationally in the D3Soccer.com poll, falls behind Haverford in the league standings after Saturday's result.

Though the Fords were out shot by a 21-6 margin, the staunch defensive wall put up by Haverford allowed just eight of those 21 shots to make it on goal.

Haverford goalkeeper Jamey Applegate came up big time and time again Saturday as he registered four saves in the first half, three in the second half and added one more in the second overtime to keep Hopkins off the scoreboard.

The Fords were able to put pressure on the Blue Jays' defense and goalie Ravi Gill but also couldn't find the back of the net in the 110 minute affair. Gill finished with two saves.

The deadlocked finish ended a string of 14 straight Hopkins wins over the Fords who last beat the Blue Jays, 3-2, in 1995.

Haverford, who has not lost a game since the season-opener, will try to keep its unbeaten string going with a Wednesday, September 29 visit to Ursinus College for a 4 p.m. Centennial contest.
