GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Sam Yarosh tallied his sixth goal of the season but it wasn't enough as the visiting Haverford College men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference action at Clark Field on Saturday afternoon.
Yarosh broke a scoreless tie in the 49th minute as he converted a pass from Brady Seitz. Seitz, who led the team in assists last season, sent a through ball from the top of the box and Yarosh put it inside the far post with one touch.
The Bullets (2-6, 2-0 CC) answered a little over five minutes later when sophomore Noah Sheetz-Ziegel took a pass from Kyle Franks and chipped a ball over the head of Haverford goalie Nick Kahn.
Looking to regain the lead, Haverford (6-2, 1-1) earned two corner opportunities over the next several minutes but it could not get one past Gettysburg senior goalie Connor Darrell.
The Fords' defense limited the Bullets to just two shots over the final 30 minutes but Sheetz-Ziegel managed to get another past Kahn (6-2) in the 66th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
A determined Haverford squad continued to battle over the remainder of the contest and tallied six more shots. Three straight corner kick opportunities around the 10-minute mark put the pressure on Gettysburg but Darrell stood tall on Matt Johnson's header and another header from Jamie Reingruber found the crossbar to help the Bullets survive.
Yarosh forced Darrell (2-6) to make his sixth stop of the game with under four minutes remaining on the clock and the Bullets held on for the victory.
The first half saw six different Fords register shots as Haverford outshot Gettysburg 6-1 over the opening 45 minutes of action. Darrell made two saves to keep the Fords off the scoreboard while Kahn corralled Sheetz-Ziegel's shot in the 43rd minute for his lone stop of the half.
Haverford finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots and had three more corner kick opportunities (7-4).
Playing in their third consecutive road contest, the Fords return to action on Wednesday night at Washington College. The Centennial game against the Shoremen begins at 7 p.m.
