HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team got a goal from Nick Jannelli with 2.9 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat McDaniel by a 1-0 score on Saturday at Walton Field. The Fords (7-2-3, 2-2-1 CC) dominated the possession against the Green Terror (7-3-1, 2-3 CC), racking up a 22-3 advantage in shots for the contest. However, it would not be until that final attempt that Haverford finally found its game-winner.

The game-winner came with an initial corner that was put into play with just 17 seconds remaining. McDaniel was unable to clear the initial insert after which Dorian Wirz collected the possession and fired a shot right into the body of the Green Terror defense. That deflection bounced out of the box to Sykes Cargile who fired an attempt at the net only to have Jannelli redirect that shot into the back of the goal with 2.9 seconds remaining.

Jannelli's goal was his ninth of the season. He now has six game-winning goals to rank second in all of Division III in that category. Cargile was credited with his first career point on the play. Jeremy Astesano needed to make just one save to record his sixth shutout of the year.

With McDaniel playing a very defensive style, Haverford also owned a 7-1 edge in corner kicks during the contest. Over the first 45 minutes, the Fords outshot the Green Terror by a 15-1 margin with the only four corner kicks of the half. Nick Over made seven saves for McDaniel, with none stopping a better opportunity for the Fords than his save on a Michael Carr header on the doorstep of goal just over five minutes into the contest. Each of his seven saves came during the opening 45 minutes. Haverford also had another chance ricochet off the crossbar during the 32nd minute of play when Wirz saw his shot catch the frame of goal.

Haverford continued its consistent pressure with a 7-2 edge in shot attempts during the second half. Five different players finished with at least three shots during the match. Jannelli led the team with a team-best four shots on the day, putting three of those attempts on goal.

Men's soccer will now play its final non-conference match of the regular season this coming Tuesday when the team travels to No. 24 Drew for a 7:30 p.m. start. Haverford returns to Centennial Conference action next Saturday with a 5 p.m. trip to Washington College for a rematch of last year's conference semifinal match.
