Men's Soccer Celebrates Seven Seniors Ahead of Gettysburg Match

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's soccer team (3-8-5, 1-5-2 CC) was upended by visiting Gettysburg (9-3-3, 4-2-2 CC), falling by a 1-0 final on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field despite holding a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks in the contest.  Prior to kickoff, Haverford honored its senior class of Paul-Andre Coulibaly, Matt Heim, Luca Mello, Liam O'Malley, Meinhardt Rentrup, Andrew Stephens, and Ben Ward for their contributions to the program both on and off the field over the past four seasons.

Coming out of the gates with a renewed energy and putting together some impressive offensive rhythm in the attacking third, Haverford added early shots from Luca Mello and Brian Lorenz in the first 10 minutes before Mello had a fantastic scoring opportunity in the 12th minute of play, missing just wide on his attempt as Haverford looked to be on the doorstep of breaking through.

Gettysburg peppered the goal on the other end with some strong counterattacks in the early goings. Noah Holgado firing high and Jack Carroll tested Dylan Ioffreda in the 20th minute, but Haverford then went back into its offensive rhythm with Tomas Ascoli, Mello and Coulibaly each putting looks on target in succession before Matt Heim had an attempt blocked just seconds later.

The Bullets broke through in the 33rd minute of action as fresh substitute Aidan Giquinto fired from the top of the box following a Haverford foul, putting the visitors ahead 1-0 heading into the intermission.

Haverford looked strong in the second, with Coulibaly and Rentrup adding early shot attempts. Pape Diallo added a pair of shots in the 66th minute, as the Bullets chased a second, but the Fords had their opportunities with Ben Ward and Coulibaly each getting looks on cage in the 72nd and 74th minute, respectively.

Gettysburg was content to step up its defensive pressure to deny an equalizer, holding the Fords without a shot in the final 10 minutes of play. Ioffreda made five saves in his time between the pipes. Mello and Coulibaly each had four total shots in the contest to lead Haverford.

The Fords now wrap up the regular season with a trip to Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 29.
