CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Haverford College softball team rallied past host Washington College, 10-7, in the second game of a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon to earn a split of the twinbill. The Fords fell 2-0 in the opening contest of the day.

Haverford (11-5, 1-1 CC) battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the second game on the strength of an eight-run effort  in the fourth inning. The Fords used five singles and heads-up base running to take advantage of two errors by the Shorewomen (13-4, 3-1) and mount the comeback. Lauren Touey and Sarah Brody registered two hits apiece in the inning while Newman came up with the other. Touey's single to right center brought Jen DiCandilo and Julie Garlick home and Brody capped the big inning by driving in Kristin Tatum.

Newman continued her impressive day at the plate with a solo homer in the fifth. Sending the first home run of her career over the center field fence, Newman's second hit of the game pushed the Haverford advantage to 9-4.

Washington answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close within 9-7 but it would get no closer as Sara Tauriello, on in relief for Claire Fitzgerald, sent the Shorewomen down in order in the final two innings.

The Fords tacked on one final run in the top of the seventh as Dayle Comerford's double to left field scored Newman who was on with a bunt single.

Touey and Newman finished with two RBIs and Garlick, Comerford, Brody and Jill Schnall chipped in with one apiece.

Tauriello (4-0) struck out six and gave up just two earned runs in five strong innings of relief work.

Christine Anderson (4-2) took the loss in the circle for the hosts as she surrendered five runs in three innings before giving way to Kristin Cooper.

Haverford fell 2-0 in the opening game of the doubleheader as the Fords' Emily Winesett and Washington's Cooper engaged in a pitching duel.

Winesett (5-3) limited the Shorewomen to just three hits over seven innings but Washington was able to scratch out two early runs that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Fords registered five hits against Cooper (8-2), including two by Touey, but could not break through on the scoreboard.

DiCandilo's double in the sixth almost produced a run but Newman was thrown out at the plate on a nice defensive play by Washington. Down to its last three outs, Tatum's lead-off double gave Haverford one more chance at a comeback but Cooper kept the Fords' bats silent over the remainder of the inning to seal the victory.

Centennial play continues on Saturday for Haverford as Dickinson College comes to Class of '95 Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
