HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team (6-6) swept a doubleheader against visiting Rosemont (1-11), securing a pair of run-rule victories on Tuesday afternoon on Class of '95 Field. The Fords took the first game 10-1 in six innings before winning the late afternoon contest 13-2 in five innings.
Rookie Kamaha'o Bode had a standout performance at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and six RBIs, including a walk-off homer in Game 1. Jocelyn Leal and Mia Kessinger also contributed strong offensive showings. Leal finished 3-for-6 with a double and five RBIs, while Kessinger went 3-for-6 with five runs scored and two RBIs. Haverford totaled 23 runs on 21 hits across the two games. The Fords' pitching staff posted a 1.91 ERA on the day, striking out 11 batters over 11 innings.
Game 1: Haverford 10, Rosemont 1 (6 innings)
In the opener against the Ravens, the Fords wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Kessinger walked, and Bode reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Kessinger into scoring position on a throwing error. Kyra Van Denburgh then singled through the right side to drive in Kessinger, while Grace Stowe followed with an RBI single to score Bode.
Haverford kept the pressure on in the second, putting two runners on to start the inning. Lauren Lamme stepped up and delivered her first collegiate hit, a single through the drawn-in right side, to load the bases. Leal followed with an RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0.
Leal added an RBI groundout in the fourth before Rosemont's Maria Harrison got one back in the top of the sixth. However, Haverford broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning, ultimately ending the contest on Bode's towering walk-off home run.
Sarah Fan reached on a bunt single, and Maddie Etheridge was hit by a pitch. Olivier reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and Leal worked a walk to bring in a run. Etheridge then scored on a wild pitch before Kessinger delivered an RBI single and promptly stole second.
Bode stepped up and crushed a three-run homer—her fifth of the season—sealing the 10-1 victory.
Lamme was dominant in the circle, striking out five and allowing just one hit over five innings. Clarissa Smith pitched the sixth, recording a strikeout while giving up one hit and one earned run.
Game 2: Haverford 13, Rosemont 2 (5 innings)
The Fords carried their offensive momentum into Game 2, scoring in every inning. Their effort was highlighted by a four-run first frame.
The first two batters reached base ahead of Bode, who roped a double into right-center to drive in a pair. Bode then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Van Denburgh brought her home with a single. Kyle Morano added a two-out RBI single, giving Haverford a 4-0 lead after one inning. Haverford tacked on more in the second as Kessinger and Bode singled before Abby Litchfield drove in a run with an RBI single. Litchfield later came around to score on a throwing error by the Rosemont catcher.
The Fords added two unearned runs in the third, with Leal contributing a base hit, before breaking the game open in the fourth. Fan led off with a single before Olivier doubled into the gap. Leal followed with an RBI double, and Kessinger added an RBI single. Bode chipped in another RBI, and pinch hitter Grace Stowe capped the inning with an RBI groundout, pushing the lead to 13-0.
Rosemont got two runs back in the fifth on a two-run homer by Emilee Dickinson, but Anna Stowe closed the door, securing another run-rule victory for the Fords.
Kaleigh Bodak was strong in her two-inning start, striking out three. Rachel McQueen took over in relief, pitching two innings while allowing two hits and striking out two to earn her third win of the season. Stowe handled the final frame to seal the win.
Haverford returns to action Thursday, traveling across Montgomery County to Gwynedd Mercy for another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 3 p.m.
