Elbert, Epeeists Lead Fords at MIT Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Haverford College women's fencing team competed Sunday in the Sollee Invitational, hosted this year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The women, despite battling throughout the day against a series of tough opponents, dropped all five matches to the New England teams and New York Universty (NYU).

Haverford had beaten all of the New England teams except Harvard in the last two years, as well as NYU, so the Fords' opponents sought their revenge on Sunday.

Illness and injury taking its toll on Haverford, foil "B" strip Leila Braun switched weapons and started in the epee, replacing a pair of absent starters. Braun tied fellow epeeist Juliana Petersen and sabriste Shannon Horn with a 6-9 record on the day. Foilist Katie Elbert led all fencers on the day with a 9-6 record. Also debuting in a starting position was freshman walk-on Elisabeth Hawthorne, whose sabre skills have greatly increased over the course of the season.
