Women's Fencing Places Fourth at EWFC Championshps

HOBOKEN, N.J. - This past Sunday, the Haverford College women's fencing team braved the frigid air and blustering snow for the 15th Annual Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships. The Fords ended up with a fourth place finish in the field of eight teams.

Stevens Insitute of Technology hosted the annual event and went on to capture the championship. The Fords' fourth place showing came with victories against Yeshiva, Drew, Hunter, and CCNY. Haverford's defeats came at the hands of Johns Hopkins, 2015 EWFC Champion Stevens Tech, and newcomer Vassar.

Epeeist Juliana Petersen placed second in the Individual tournament, finishing runner-up to Johns Hopkins' Katherine Couch in the epee. Petersen's performance earned her first-team All-EWFC honors. The Haverford captain racked up 17 victories against just two losses. Her 17 victories were a team high on Sunday.

Sabriste Sofia Tieze also garnered all-conference status. With a seventh place finished in the individual events, Tieze earned second-team All-EWFC honors. Her 10-8 record led all sabristes during the team event. Freshman Alexandra Morrison was the top scoring foilist with a 9-10 record. She fell in the round of 16 during the individual bouts. Other key showings from the Fords included epeeist Alexis Auer's 6-5 record against the top three teams in the conference. Sabriste Diana Schoder also split her bouts on the day, recording an 8-8 record.

The Haverford women's fencing team will host friendly Alumni matches this Saturday, February 21, followed by a banquet. The team will next compete at the prestigious NIWFA (National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association) Championship on Saturday, February 28. That meet will be hosted by Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. The Fords are the defending NCAA Division III Champions in the NIWFA, but must overcome the resurgent Ducks of Stevens Tech.
