Petersen Earns Spot on Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team

Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area At-Large Team

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Junior Juliana Petersen has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. The women's fencing captain is one of 11 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area women's at-large team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The at-large teams take into account those student-athletes from area schools whose sports do not have a dedicated Academic All-Area team. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

A psychology major at Haverford, Petersen earned first-team All-Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) honors this past season after registering a team-high 17 victories during that event. The junior epeeist went on to place 23rd at the NCAA Regional. Over the course of the year, Petersen also notched a 10th place finish at the Temple Open – the highest of any Division III fencer. She went 20-3 at the Vassar Invitational and led the team with 13 wins at the Sollee Invitational.

Petersen is one of two female student-athletes at Haverford to earn recognition on the women's at-large team, joining squash player Samara Flug. The Fords' two honorees tie with the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel for the most recipients of any school. Petersen is one of two women's fencers to be selected to the at-large team, earning the distinction alongside Penn's Sarah Parmacek.
