STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's fencing team competed against some of the toughest competition it will face all season at the Penn State Invitational on Sunday. All six of Haverford's duals were against teams ranked in the top 10 of the CollegeFencing360.com Poll or receiving votes in the national poll.

Fencing among the nation's best, the Fords were led by an impressive day from sophomore Anna Neuheardt. The sabrist scored individual victories in four of the team's matches while the squad recorded a bout victory in all but the opening match of the day. Neuheardt was at her best against the Fords' toughest competition as she claimed two individual sabre victories against No. 8 Penn State and No. 9 Temple, along with two wins against a receiving votes Yale team. The sophomore also secured a bout for the Fords in the dual against North Carolina.

Adding to the individual success of the sabre squad was senior Sofia Tieze. Tieze secured the sabre team's bout during the dual against Penn. The senior also capped her day with a victory against No. 8 Penn State as the sabre squad fell to the host Nittany Lions by a 6-3 score in its closest weapon dual of the afternoon.

Shaking off tough results from the morning, the foil and epee teams also rallied for wins to close the afternoon. Co-captain Alexandra Morrison claimed the first bout of the day for the foil squad with a victory over Penn. In the very next match, freshman Zuyi Wang got her first win of the day in the matchup with the Tar Heels. Going up against the host Nittany Lions in the final round, freshman Katie Bradley stepped up to deliver an epee victory before the close of the invitational.

Women's fencing will return to the strips next Sunday, January 22 when it travels to Penn for the Philadelphia Invitational. Fencing will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday and will be a complete day of women's action as the men will compete at Penn on Saturday.
