Women's Fencing Bests Wagner at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Haverford College women's fencing team defeated Wagner to highlight its day at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday. The Fords continue to make strong improvements as the season progresses, evidenced by the team avenging an earlier defeat to Wagner back in November. Competing at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford continued to challenge itself with bouts against three Division I squads.

During the victory against Wagner, Haverford's epee squad rose to the challenge in a big way as the Fords won eight of the nine bouts in that weapon. Maia Carvalho and Sarah Blossom led the epee squad in total victories on the day as each posted unblemished 3-0 marks in the team's triumph. Carvalho won bouts during four of her five rounds, including the team's bout victory against Cornell, to total seven wins. Blossom added two more wins to her total of five victories during the tight battle with NJIT. Katie Bradley secured two crucial bout victories against Wagner and also notched a win against NJIT.

Hanna Kopits led the foilists with an 8-5 record. Her day got started with a 3-0 record against rival Johns Hopkins as Haverford's foil squad came within one bout of toppling the Blue Jays. Kopits was also perfect in the matchup versus Wagner, notching a 5-4 bout victory in the final matchup of that round to help her squad secure a 5-4 victory. Golda Glasser added two more victories during the squad win against Wagner and finished her day with four wins in total. Co-captain Zuyi Wang matched that mark with four victories. She picked up Haverford's win against the host Quakers and also defeated a foe from JHU.

Sabrists Caroline Donado and Macy Brooks played key roles in the team victory against Wagner as each secured a win to aid in the tight final team score. Donado additionally found success with another victory in the matchup against NJIT for the young weapon squad.

Women's fencing concludes the month of January this coming Saturday as the Fords host their Alumnae Bouts/Reception inside the Andy Kates Fencing Salle. After that event, which is always a highlight of the season, Haverford returns to competition on Saturday, February 1 with the Sollee Invitational on the campus of Brandeis
