
PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College women's fencing team wrapped up its second day of action at the Philadelphia Invitational, taking on squads from Penn, Yale, Temple, and NJIT to conclude the competition. Action on the strips began early as the Fords faced the host Quakers in the first round.
Round One: Penn 23, Haverford 4
Against the Quakers, Haverford secured an individual win in foil and sabre, along with two victories in epee. In foil, Sophie Stamicar earned a win over Emily Kim, while Nina Chaffee and Nina Hamilton notched epee victories against Alexandra Wong. Carter Wood added a sabre win over Hailey Lu.
Round Two: Yale 24, Haverford 3
Facing their second consecutive Ivy League opponent, the Bulldogs, Haverford collected all three of its wins in sabre. Eliza Kollett, Eleni Antoniades, and Carter Wood each posted victories against Yale.
Round Three: Temple 25, Haverford 2
Taking on the Owls, Haverford found its greatest success in epee, with Nina Chafee earning both wins for the Fords against Caira Blake and Anne-Mai Melles.
Round Four: NJIT 18, Haverford 9
Against the Highlanders, Haverford battled to a 6-3 final in each weapon. In foil, Emely Polanco, Sophie Stamicar, and Paige Copenhaver picked up victories. In epee, Joselyne Malan earned two wins, and Olivia Rueger added a third. In foil, Carter Wood led the sabre squad with an undefeated 3-0 record, besting Kaydine Gonzalez, Zoey Wen, and Ramnda Shalabi.
Haverford's challenging weekend of competition provided valuable experience against some of the nation's top programs. With the season now in full swing, the Fords will turn their focus to the Penn State Invitational on Sunday, January 26, in University Park, Pa. The team will face another formidable slate, including Penn State, Penn, Temple, North Carolina, Columbia, Duke, and Yale.
