Women's Fencing Takes On Nation's Best at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Haverford College women's fencing team competed at the Penn State Invitational on Sunday afternoon, facing some of the nation's top programs in the Multi-Sport Facility on the Penn State campus. The Fords took on fencers from Penn State, Penn, Wagner, North Carolina, Columbia, and Princeton.

Round 1: Penn State 24, Haverford 3
Against the Nittany Lions, Haverford secured three victories, all in the epee competition. Nina Hamilton claimed two wins, while Nina Chafee added another.

Round 2: Princeton 21, Haverford 6
Facing the Tigers, ranked No. 4 in the national preseason poll, the Fords earned six victories. Carter Wood, Eleni Antoniades, and Sienna Chung each notched wins in sabre, while Nina Chafee (2) and Nina Hamilton added victories in epee.

Round 3: Columbia 27, Haverford 0
Haverford was unable to claim an individual victory against Columbia, the preseason No. 3 team. The Lions swept the round with 9-0 decisions across all three weapons.

Round 4: Penn 27, Haverford 0
The Quakers, ranked seventh nationally, secured a 27-0 shutout over the Fords as part of their four-win performance on Sunday.

Round 5: North Carolina 26, Haverford 1
The Fords earned their lone point against the Tar Heels through the prowesss of Sophie Gardiner, who recorded a victory in foil competition.

Round 6: Wagner 21, Haverford 6
In a close foil contest, the Fords were edged 5-4 by the Seahawks. Wins came from Paige Copenhaver, Sophie Gardiner (2), and Sophie Stamicar. In epee, Nina Hamilton and Payton Wagner added two more victories.

Looking Ahead
The women's fencing team will return to action on Sunday, February 2, at the JHU Invitational in Baltimore on the campus of Johns Hopkins.
