Women's Fencing Earns Two Wins at Blue Jay Invitational

BALTIMORE – The Haverford College women's fencing team competed at the Blue Jay Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Fords registered victories over Navy and Rutgers to highlight a busy day of competition.

Round 1: Haverford 19, Navy 8
Opening the day against the United States Naval Academy, Haverford earned a 7-2 win in épée, with Olivia Rueger going 3-0 while Payton Wagner and Joselyne Malan each picked up two victories. In foil, Paige Copenhaver and Sophie Stamicar both posted 3-0 records, while Emely Polanco added a 2-1 mark. Navy secured a 5-4 win in sabre, with Sophie Gardiner and Sienna Chung recording victories for Haverford.

Round 2: Haverford 19, Rutgers 8
Facing the Scarlet Knights in the second round, the foil squad posted a 6-3 win, with Stamicar going 3-0, Polanco earning two victories, and Copenhaver adding one. The sabre squad delivered a dominant performance, sweeping Rutgers as Gardiner, Eliza Kollett, and Chung went undefeated. Rutgers edged Haverford 5-4 in épée, with Nina Hamilton notching two wins, while Rueger and Wagner added one victory each.

Round 3: Drew 24, Haverford 3
Against a familiar varsity opponent in Drew, the Fords struggled to keep pace with the Rangers. Chung recorded Haverford's lone victory in sabre, while Gardiner and Stamicar each secured a win in foil.

Round 4: Lafayette 15, Haverford 12
In a closely contested matchup with the Leopards, Lafayette claimed all six contested bouts in épée. Haverford responded with a 5-4 triumph in foil, buoyed by a 2-0 performance from Gardiner. Despite two wins from Kollett and additional victories from Chung and Reuger, Lafayette edged Haverford 5-4 in sabre to secure the overall match.

Haverford returns to action next weekend with a pair of big matchups in the Garden State, traveling to the Drew Meet on Saturday, February 8, before competing at the FDU Invitational on Sunday, February 9.
